4/8-4/12

We are quickly moving toward the end of the year. Here are a few dates that you can plan for:

Tuesday, April 16- We are going to the recycling center in Beckley. Parents do not need to attend this trip. We are taking the vans with Third grade.
Thursday, April 18- We will have our Easter Party. Let me know if you would like to help.
Friday, April 19, to Sunday, April 28- Spring Break!
Friday, May 3- Second Grade will be doing a "Pastries for Parents" breakfast. This is for Second grade parents only. It will start at 8:10 a.m. and be over by 9:00 a.m. Students will return to class. I will send more information about it later.
Tuesday, May 21- Last, but not least, we are going to Babcock State Park for our end of the year field trip. We will be taking a hike in the morning, doing hotdogs and s'mores over the fire for lunch, and playing at the park in the afternoon. We would love for parents to join us for our end of the year celebration.

Don't forget: we have set a goal for every student to make a 100% on their practice Spelling test on Tuesday. Please encourage your kids to study. We want an ice cream party!

Second Grade Discipline Policy

We have a discipline chart that the students will climb if the correct behavior is being followed or recline if the incorrect behavior is being displayed. Students will chart their color everyday on a calendar that stays in their take home folder. Our classroom rules follows 1 Cor. 13:4-8.

Homework Policy

In second grade homework is typically limited to Reading, Spelling, and Bible. However if classwork is not completed by the end of the day, it must be completed at home for homework. It is important for students to practice math facts occasionally. Also, if a child chooses incorrect classroom behavior and fails to complete assigned work during class, these pages may also be sent home for completion and must be returned the next school day.

In Reading, students will be expected to read 3 nights a week and fill out a Reading log. There may be an occasional homework quiz given in class to test on comprehension.

In spelling, a new list of words is assigned every Wednesday. Students will practice the words in class on Thursday, Friday, Monday, and Tuesday however, the parent(s) and student may decide upon their own method for studying words at home to better prepare for weekly tests. A pre-test is given on Tuesdays. Spelling tests are given on Wednesdays. Students may complete bonus work to be counted toward their test. Only 5 bonus points will be counted toward each test. **If a test is missed on Wednesday, due to an absence or snow day, it will be given the next day students are in school.

In the event a student fails to return his or her homework to school the following measures may be taken:

1. Complete the assignment during recess

2. Complete the assignment during an extracurricular class

3. Complete the assignment in class, but with additional work given (Example: write spelling words two times instead of one)

4. A parent/teacher conference

5. After school detention (extreme circumstance)

Attendance policy:

Please refer to page 6 and 7 of the Student Handbook. Also, students will be counted absent if they leave before 1:30 p.m. and tardy if they leave after 1:30 p.m.
